A LISTING OF ALL MILITARY POLICE CORPS COMBAT LOSSES. THESE DOCUMENTS WERE RECEIVED FROM THE MILITARY POLICE ARCHIVES OF THE MILITARY POLICE MUSEUM, FORT LEONARD WOOD, MO Date range from June 1918 through July 2015
Subject: World War I Military Police killed in action or died from wounds received in battle. Answering questions and reading through files, I was disheartened at the lack of information on WWI Military Police deaths in combat. In recent publications and ceremonies, numbers of one through twelve were offered, but no names, units, or dates were provided. To rectify this omission, I have compiled a listing of World War I fallen MPs. Although not infallible, it is hoped that this listing will bring a greater understanding of the sacrifices made by MPs during “The Great War”. - Andy Watson, Historian, US Army Military Police Regiment Numbers and dates: 6 April1917, US Congress declares war on Germany. First elements of the US Army reinforce Allied lines in July of 1917. By January 1918, US Army troops are on the front lines in divisional strength. Later the declaration of the armistice occurs on 11 November 1918. Although comparatively brief, the war accounted for 52, 947 American Expeditionary Force deaths in battle or from wounds received in combat. Disease, accidents, and other non-combat related deaths would bring the total figure to 116,516. Methodology: Although MPs are always on dangerous duty, I have concentrated on deaths in connection with enemy forces. I focused on MPs attached to the American Expeditionary Force within France and Belgium. The number of WWI Military Police losses would likely triple if accidents, diseases such as pneumonia and influenza, and homicides were included. During WWI MPs participating in combat operations were overwhelmingly divisional MPs, so I have concentrated my research on WWI combat divisions. Also of note, MP companies were attached to Divisional Headquarters and its troops were sometimes referred to as part of the HQ Train organization. Assistance: For a project of this nature help is definitely needed, and fortunately in this case it was received. Apart from my research, MSG (ret.) Troy Morgan, volunteer, provided superior assistance through diligence in research and thorough knowledge of library and archival sources. Juanita Duncan, librarian at the Clarke/MANSCEN Library also was extremely helpful and provided extra information whenever possible. Sources: Many resources were needed to piece together this information. It was difficult putting together files that included active combat WWI Divisions, duty on the line, verifying Killed in Action versus other causes of death, times and locations of units and deaths, and other organizational/personnel mysteries. In many cases the most challenging piece was finding a Military Police connection. The following is a listing of the sources and organizations utilized to solve some of these unknowns.

Subject: Military Police of the Korean War (1950-1953) killed in action, died from wounds, or died while held as prisoners of war. Similar to my research in connection with military police killed in action for World War I, I wanted an accurate listing of military police lost in the Korean War. I thought this would be an easy task due to better record keeping and the availability of research material online. I was wrong. The urgency of the early phases of the war would put many Soldiers that were formerly MPs or had been trained as military policemen on the frontlines. Many times their branch affiliation was lost due to a variety of reasons. It is hoped that we can now consider these Soldiers as military policemen. Although not infallible, it is hoped that this listing will bring a greater understanding of the sacrifices made by MPs during the Korean War. I hope that we can make sure that “The Forgotten War”, will not lead to forgotten MPs. Numbers and dates: On 25 June 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea; although there were US Army advisors (to include MPs) on-site, US Forces did not engage the North Koreans on the ground until 5 July 1950. On 27 July 1953 after fierce fighting and numerous changes in the balance of power in the Korean Peninsula, an armistice is signed bringing an end to major hostilities. The war accounted for 33,739 American deaths in battle. Disease, accidents, and other non-combat related deaths would bring the total figure to 54,246. Methodology: Although MPs are always on dangerous duty, I have concentrated on deaths in connection with enemy forces. During the Korean War deaths attributed to mines were not considered as “hostile”. I have now included these losses. Also due to the harsh treatment of prisoners of war I have included those military police Soldiers who died as POWs. As previously mentioned, many times Soldiers trained as MPs were used as infantry and their branch affiliation was in question. I have tried to include Soldiers that had a strong link to the MP Corps. Assistance: For a project of this nature help is definitely needed, and fortunately in this case it was received. Apart from my research, MSG (ret.) Troy Morgan, a museum specialist with the Military Police Museum, and MAJ (ret.) Kathy West, a researcher with the MOAC project, provided superior assistance through meticulous research. Sources: Many resources were needed to piece together this information. It was difficult putting together accurate files that included information on military police during the Korean War. In many cases the most challenging piece was finding a military police connection. The following is a listing of the sources and organizations utilized to solve some of these unknowns.

Of these troops, some images or other documents have been found that show them serving as military policemen at some point. More documentation is needed. Of the 137 names, 66 have an MP MOS but were listed as having a different branch. **During the occupation of Japan shortly before involvement in Korea, members of the 25th Military Police Company and 25th Reconnaissance Company were intermixed, sharing the same billets and performing as MPs. Early members of this organization killed in action are noted. 1Earl Baxter was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. His MP connection is still being reviewed.
